Application scope and technological development of fluorine free waterproofing agents for fabrics

1、 Technical characteristics and environmental advantages of fluorine free waterproofing agent
Fluorine free waterproofing agents form hydrophobic films on fiber surfaces through modified resins, organosilicon or paraffin compounds, achieving waterproofing function. Their core advantage is that they do not contain perfluorinated compounds (PFAS) and comply with international environmental regulations (such as the EU PFOS ban and China’s Key Control New Pollutant List). Compared to fluorinated products, its biodegradability is better, but its oil resistance is weaker, and it needs to be improved through compounding technology to enhance washing resistance and anti siphon effect.

2、 Main application areas and scenario analysis

Outdoor sports equipment
Tent and mountaineering clothing: Nylon or polyester fabrics treated with fluorine free waterproofing agents can resist rainwater infiltration while maintaining breathability, making them suitable for high-altitude extreme environments. For example, the water level of 420T nylon fabric after treatment reaches level 4 or above (GB/T 4745-2012 standard).

Shoe materials and backpacks: Anti siphon fluorine free agents (such as WSP-02D) can prevent moisture from seeping through the stitching and extend the product’s lifespan.

Daily clothing and home textiles
Leisure clothing: Cotton linen blended fabric, after being treated with acrylic fluorine free agents (such as WSA-22), has basic water repellent function and is suitable for commuting during the rainy season.
Table cloth and sofa fabric: Paraffin zirconium salt composite formula can resist liquid splashing and meet home fire prevention standards (such as GB 45320-2025 requirements for combustion performance).
Industrial fabrics and special protection
Medical protective clothing: Modified polyurethane fluorine free agent (such as WSP-01) maintains waterproofness while meeting the breathability requirements of medical fabrics.
Automotive interior: Used in conjunction with flame retardants to enhance the weather resistance of automotive fabrics (refer to industry standard JC/T 1072-2024).

3、 Technological challenges and innovation directions
Performance bottleneck: Existing fluorine free products lack protection against polar oil stains such as chili oil, and require the development of biomimetic structures (such as lotus leaf effect micro nano coatings).
Cost control: Large scale production can reduce the cost of acrylic fluorine free agents by 15% to 20%, promoting market penetration.

4、 Standardization and Future Trends
GB/T 21295-2024, which will be implemented in 2025, will add waterproof performance testing requirements to promote the standardized application of fluorine free agents in the clothing industry. It is expected that the global market size will reach 868 million US dollars by 2030, with China accounting for over 30%.
